Tyler Arboretum

February 17, 2019 0

I can't take care of plants, for multiple times I tried, but all the plants I got, they are all death. I have an Orchid plant on my room, and honestly I don't know what's wrong with it. But, yes, I like to stay in touch with nature and being around of trees, plants, that's why I visit arboretums and gardens a lot.

Last arboretum I visited was Tyler arboretum, not the most scenic I have seen, but there will be moments when it will tear you out sighs.

It's original owner was Thomas Minshall, who bought the land in 1681, and then owned by eight of Minshall generations.

Tyler, it's an arboretum that kids will enjoy. They are allowed to climb, explore and play in their tree houses. You can also enjoy the Butterfly House, the Meadow Maze, hiking trails, small deck with a beautiful Pound and some historical buildings.

Fonthill Castle

February 02, 2019 0

I like knowing about history, its something very interesting, learning, about the past of people, buildings, cities. From where everything came from? That´s why most of my blog is about historical places, about architecture with history.

Modern architecture can be amazing, but when we see old buildings, old castle, historic houses and mansions, they have their own magic.

I did not know United States had castles, until I went to Washington crossing park and collecting brochures I saw in one of then, Fonthill Castle. I said… I have to go there, so in my second week of vacations, that was the first place on my schedule.

Fonthill castle was built between 1908 and 1912, was the home of Henry Chapman Mercer. Interesting man who was an anthropologist, antiquarian  and archaeologist. Fonthill wasn't just his home, it was also a showplace for his collections.

Mercer died in 1930, and since his death, the castle became into a museum.

the architecture is very amazing, I know you will fall in love. Parking is easy to find, and activities like weddings can be done at the castle. Do not miss Fonthill Castle, "the castle for the New World"

Admissions for adult its 15$ and for youth 8$. Kids under 5 are free of charge. Fonthill is open Monday to Saturday 10:00am  - 5:00pm and Sundays from noon to 5:00pm.

Winnies at Manayunk

January 09, 2019 0

Talking about food, I must say, Puerto Rican, American and Chinese food are my favorite (I am Puerto Rican, liking my island food its on my veins). When I want to eat real American food I always go to Manayunk to my favorite restaurant called Winnies.

I have tried almost the entire menu and I have to say that I like most of it. There some exceptions in the menu, but in general everything is good. One of my favorite meal is the waffle with chicken, this meal have his breakfast version, but adding a poached egg in the top of the chicken. The turkey pot pie is also fantastic, and also the cheesestake with poached lobster. I cried for the cheesetake, I was full and did not finish my sandwich, the waitress put it in a box, and I forgot the box in the restaurant! Was too late when I remembered it.

The service is good most of the time, last time I went there my waitress was not too caring, but I guessed that he was new, and needed experience. I can not judge the restaurant for one person, also when in the past I always had good experiences with my waitress.

What make this restaurant my favorite one? Is the food, the variety in the menu. The prizes are not expensive, parking is easy to get in the parking slots near the restaurant. If you are planning in the weekend go out for dinner I certainly suggest you to go to Winnies.

Shofuso Japanese Garden

December 23, 2018 0

More than one month I do not write in the blog. Not that I do not enjoy anymore writing. I have been moving to my new apartment, and when already finished moving all my stuff I had no internet for two weeks. But now I am here, bringing again another exciting post.

In 1954 after the war between Japan and United States, they decided to make peace,  and as a symbol of peace, Japan gave to the Americans the Shofuso house and garden.  Originally was exhibited in New york and then transferred to Philadelphia.

Parking is easy to find and the admission fee is 12$ for adult with discount for access members. They offers tours for people interested and hours of operations depends of the season.

For more information you can visit the Official web site: japanphilly.org/shofuso/

Chanticleer Garden

November 03, 2018 0

Chanticleer Garden is a botanical garden built in 1912 as a summer cottage for Christine Penrose and Adolf Rosengarten and family. Since 1984, chanticleer garden is included in the National register of historic places.

A description I could give to the garden is… Romantic, magic, wonderful. When I heard about the place by first time, I did not expect much, but after visiting it, it became one of my favorites for the moment. The houses were the Rosengarten family lived, was built in Colonial Revival, Colonial Pastoral style.

The travel of the garden is not too long. It can take no more than one hour. The Admission fee is 10.00$ but you can pay only 2.00$ with the access card.
